1. How does ONGARD® protect me?

ONGARD® Skin Protectant is a barrier cream that will create a polymer surface on your skin. After you have applied ONGARD® on your skin, urushiol oil in poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac plants will remain on the surface of your skin and not penetrate the pores of your skin. While the zinc oxide in ONGARD® helps dry up the urushiol, it is also important to wash your hands with soap and water after exposure to urushiol oil and then dry them on a disposable paper towel. If you are exposed to these poisonous plants, do not touch your face or any other part of your body until you have completely washed off the urushiol oil.

2. If I get hot and sweaty, will ONGARD® come off?

ONGARD® is not water soluble, so it will remain on your skin even in hot weather when you sweat profusely. Your sweat glands will remain open, but the large molecules in urushiol oil do not get into your pores while ONGARD® is at work to protect you from poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac.

3. How does ONGARD® differ from any other poison ivy protectant?

The differences are significant. ONGARD® does not contain alcohol so it doesn’t dry your skin. ONGARD® does not contain clay which will cake on your skin and wash off if you sweat or you get your skin wet. Also, ONGARD® contains allantoin which is an emollient that makes your skin feel good and it also helps heal minor cuts or bruises.

4. How many applications of ONGARD® are in a 1.5 ounce tube?

A typical application of ONGARD® in the palm of your hand is the approximate size of a dime. There are approximately 60 applications in one tube to protect your hands. However, many people apply ONGARD® on their arms and legs for additional protection and since that creates a larger area to cover, it would reduce the number of applications.

5. Can I apply ONGARD® on arms and legs?

Yes, you can do that. ONGARD® is safe on your skin, but of course be careful to avoid getting ONGARD® (or any other lotion) near your eyes. ONGARD® is a barrier cream protectant that will keep poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac urushiol oil from getting into your pores.

6. Is ONGARD® safe or will it irritate my skin?

ONGARD® is a barrier cream lotion that is applied to clean/dry skin, providing a safe, long term, protective, moisturizing film with properties that dry up urushiol oil, the sap in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. The ingredients in this product are safe and widely used in applications from cosmetic and medical preparations-formulations to ophthalmic preparations.

7. If I wear gloves, do I still need ONGARD®?

The answer is yes. Gloves help, but when you remove them, your hands can come in contact with poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac urushiol oil when you touch the gloves, your shoes, or your clothes that have been in contact with those poisonous plants.

8. How long will ONGARD® give me protection from poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac?

ONGARD® needs to be applied every four hours. The reason is that the skin sloughs off skin particles after about four hours so any protectant should be re-applied every four hours.

9. Can I get a rash from poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac by petting my dog or cat?

Yes you can. Most animals have a protective skin that is immune to the urushiol oil in poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. The urushiol oil can remain on the surface of your pet’s fur or skin and when a human hand touches the animal, the urushiol oil can transfer to you.

10. What is the best way to get protection from poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac?

Before you go outside, apply ONGARD® Skin Protectant to your hands and any other exposed skin that could touch the leaves on any poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac plant. If you stay outside, you should re-apply ONGARD® every four hours.
